SigenStor: Protecting the Vital Energy Lifeline Between China and Myanmar
At the Yenangyaung Natural Gas Distribution Station in Myanmar, yellow pipelines weave across the site, silver storage tanks rise prominently, and photovoltaic panels create a vast sea of renewable energy, fueling this vital energy hub. Inside the control room, ten SigenStor units are meticulously arranged, supporting the station’s mission of achieving a "green power supply and zero-carbon operation."
Solving Power Supply Challenges, Ensuring Stable Operation of Energy Hubs
The China-Myanmar oil and gas pipeline project stretches from Kyaukpyu in Myanmar to Ruili in China. As a cornerstone of energy cooperation between the two countries, it is one of China's four major "lifelines" for energy.
The Yenangyaung Natural Gas Distribution Station plays a crucial role in the China-Myanmar pipeline but has long faced challenges with an unstable power supply. In 2023, the station experienced 165 power outages, with 121 incidents occurring in the first half of 2024 alone. The longest single outage lasted up to 4 hours.
A stable power supply is the foundation of the entire natural gas transport system. Key equipment—such as flow measurement systems, UPS systems, and valve controls—relies on continuous, stable power to operate accurately, ensuring the safe and efficient transportation of natural gas through high-pressure pipelines. Any power interruption or voltage fluctuation can lead to equipment shutdowns, data loss, and even disrupt pressure balance, which poses risks to production and results in high maintenance costs.
Previously, the Yenangyaung Station relied on natural gas and diesel generators for backup power during outages. However, these generators have a startup delay, making it impossible to provide instant power. This causes brief but impactful power interruptions that disrupt the operation of critical equipment. Additionally, the long-term use of these generators leads to high maintenance costs, significant fuel consumption, and increased greenhouse gas emissions, undermining green and low-carbon development goals.
With the installation of SigenStor system, the Yenangyaung station transitioned from a "reactive response" model to an "active protection" approach. Using Sigenergy’s rapid on/off-grid switching technology, the station now ensures seamless power supply during outages. The 480 kWh energy storage system supports the continuous and stable operation of essential equipment. Since installation, the station has seen a significant improvement in power reliability, eliminating the production risks associated with frequent outages and providing a solid foundation for the safe transmission of natural gas.
Pack-Level Energy Storage Safety for Greater Peace of Mind
Safety is always a top priority at natural gas distribution stations. A safety incident could result not only in economic losses but also in major impacts on the pipeline network and surrounding environment. Therefore, the reliability of the power supply system is critical.
SigenStor system sets the highest safety standards in the industry by integrating advanced features such as temperature sensors, internal fire extinguishers, aerogel-insulated pads, decompression valves, and high-temperature resistant insulating pads. This five-layer safety design ensures comprehensive protection for the energy storage system.
The system’s design places a strong emphasis on fire control, with pack-level safety features that rapidly respond to abnormal battery modules and prevent the spread of fire. Combined with Sigenergy’s cloud-based BMS (Battery Management System), real-time alerts are triggered for potential hazards, ensuring safer energy usage.
To further enhance safety, Sigenergy’s system includes multiple protective designs:
- DC Arc Detection: Provides real-time detection and rapid disconnection of potentially faulty circuits, preventing fire risks caused by aging wires or short circuits.
- PV Disconnect Protection Circuit: Quickly disconnects the photovoltaic input during abnormal conditions to maintain current stability within the system.
- Built-in Miniature Circuit Breaker: Offers high-sensitivity overcurrent protection, ensuring safe operation of equipment under extreme conditions.
- DC Bus Protection Circuit: Responds quickly to overloads and fault currents in the DC circuit, preventing escalation.
Additionally, Sigenergy uses advanced communication technologies to achieve the industry’s fastest 0.5-second anti-backflow control, preventing equipment damage, system failures, and fire incidents. These technologies, from hardware protection to intelligent management, form an impenetrable safety shield for the natural gas distribution station.
Modular Design: Installed and Operational within the Same Month
“Sigenergy’s modular design offers increased flexibility in transportation and greater efficiency in installation. Even with logistics disruptions in Myanmar, the team managed to complete the installation and commission the system within the same month—an achievement that truly impresses,” said Mr. Yang, project leader at Helios, the company responsible for the station’s construction.
Throughout the construction process, Sigenergy passed professional industry tests with ease in areas like grounding resistance, insulation performance, and environmental adaptability. The system’s IP66 and waterproof rating, coupled with a maintenance-free design, enhances SigenStor’s ability to operate in challenging industrial environments. Thanks to its stable and efficient performance, SigenStor has received unanimous recognition from the Yenangyaung Natural Gas Distribution Station project team. The two parties are currently in discussions regarding the Phase II expansion of the project.
On this vital energy “lifeline” running through China and Myanmar, Sigenergy is providing continuous green power for natural gas transmission with unmatched performance and safety, ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future.
